February 5 at Lincoln South Rotary
Our speaker on February 5th 2016 was Harvey Perlman, Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Harvey gave us an update on what is going on at the University.  He will be stepping down at the end of this academic year.  The focus of the university is on 1) Undergraduate studies and 2) Research.  We need to keep our young talent in our state and have a more diverse economy.  The University is growing.  It has gone from 21,000 to 25,000 students this year and a goal of 30,000 by 2020.  Another goal is to increase the diversity.  They would expect the growth to come from non-resident and International students.  We have seen significant increase since joining the Big 10.  The Big 10 does matter and provides a big benefit.  The Research focus is important as it drives economic development.  For every million spent on research, 30 new jobs are created.  We spent $275 million last year on research of which 80% comes from Federal Govt and industries.  The goal is to be at $300 million by 2020.

Rotaract
We were introduced to the new UNL Rotaract President Elizabeth Rembert. Lincoln South Rotary is now a co-sponsor of UNL Rotaract along with Lincoln #14. We are also hoping to connect some SCC students to the Rotaract Club.

As Rotary members, if you are interested in being a mentor to one of the Rotaract students, or wish to be on the committee working with Rotaract, please let us know.

There is a photo album on the club website (see links along the top) for Rotaract activiteis.
Rotary Foundation Drive
The Lincoln South Rotary Foundation Drive is wrapping up. Please get your contributions to Joe Roberts, so we can meet our goal of $9,300. Joe will report the final totals once he has contacted everyone.

As has been the tradition for a number of years, on January 29th there was a drawing from eligible members for an immediate Paul Harris Fellow which is funded by Lincoln South Rotary. To be eligible, a member has to have contributed at least $300 to the Paul Harris Foundation. Since only 2 members Pat Haverty and Kay Wunderlich qualified this year, a Paul Harris Fellow was given to both. Congratulations Pat and Kay!

In addition Joe reported that 6 members increased their contributions this year: Tracey McLain, Scott Delisi, Brad Carter, Dick Miller, Wayne & Rosita Moore and Lance Odom. Thanks to all for your commitment to Rotary!

Salute to Business April 5, 2016 honors Nelnet
Mark your calendars for the Salute to Business event on Tuesday April 5, 2016. This event is sponsored by all 4 Lincoln Rotary clubs and honors a local business which has contributed to job growth in the community.

The luncheon will be held at the Cornhusker Hotel and Nelnet has been selected as the honoree this year.

Lincoln South Rotary is putting together a table of 10 so if you would like to attend, contact Joe Roberts. Cost is $30 per person. This event will count as our regular meeting so Lincoln South will NOT be holding its meeting on Friday April 8th.

RYLA Volunteers Needed
Tom Cardwell is asking for 2-3 volunteers to help with the RYLA camp at camp Kitaki from April 15th to April 17th. RYLA which is Rotary Youth Leadership Award puts on a camp each year to teach leadership skills to high school youth. Please contact Tom if you can help.
