Doc Chaves from Li-Cor Biosciences was our speaker on May 13. Li-Cor’s tag line on their website is “Impacting Lives through Science”, but Doc explained that what they do is “help scientists answer difficult questions”.
LI-COR started in Lincoln and has subsidiaries in Bad Homburg, Germany and Cambridge, UK. Their instruments are used in over 100 countries worldwide. It is a family-owned business that is privately funded receiving only a few small grants.
There are three primary areas that their work impacts – environmental (measure and analyze solutions for food production, air quality and environmental monitoring), biotechnology (research at the cellular level), and Clinical Translation (dyes for use in clinical trials).
On May 20, 2016 we will hear from Kyle Schneweis, Director, Nebraska Department of Roads. We can look forward to an update on the focus and programs at the Nebraska Department of Roads since his appointment by Governor Rickets in May, 2015.
Introducing Lincoln South Rotary Club's newest Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation - Dave and Chris Dietz.
Chris, a member of Lincoln South Rotary for a number of years, passed away last July. After joining Lincoln South Rotary, Chris' husband Dave was considering how to create a legacy in her name.
Dave Dietz stated "Lincoln South Rotary Club and all of you members meant so much to Chris I wanted to do this in her honor. She truly believed in Rotary and the mission - all of the good things that are done through Rotary".
Thank you to Dave for his generosity in making this Level 2 Major gift and for keeping Chris' desires alive through Rotary.
Another grant opportunity . . . these projects are typically from $2,000 to $3,000. With these projects we are seeking ideas for projects - where we can include active involvement by Rotary Club Members.
Some past activities - supporting the development of a handicap accessible access to the Southern Heights Food Forest, providing furniture and storage for the child care center at Voices of Hope, providing and installing equipment for a theater room at the Salvation Army Resource center and building a portable mini-golf course for the Northeast Family Center.
The Lincoln South Rotary Club Foundation is taking applications for grants to be awarded early in June. Applications are due May 20, 2016 by 5:00 PM.
Grants awarded through the Lincoln South Rotary Foundation generally are in the area of youth and education. All club members are encouraged to discuss these opportunities with organizations that might benefit from these grants.
