Sheri shared that she has an interesting role - a combination of work and volunteer activities. She is not only a property manager, but a supporter of the residents. She is a volunteer at Matt Talbot kitchen where she has met many of the residents. She is a counselor, a staff member of Heroes into Homes and a former Army National Guard member.
She obviously has a passion to assist all veterans in all situations.
Victory Park is a community - not just an apartment complex. They rely on community partners and individual support to provide support to Veterans. Using the Lincoln Housing Authority criteria, veterans are served in the complex along with a spouse.
placement is based on the Lincoln Housing Authority criteria. The basis for placement at Victory Park is they must have income no more than $27,450 and cannot have additional family living with them (just spouses). In this particular location, they must also be veterans.
The residents likely have psychological or emotional issues. They are formerly homeless. Many have substance abuse problems or other mental illnesses. That is likely why they are not making more than $27,450 per year. Most are over 50 but there are a few younger.
Victory Park is a complex of 70 one bedroom units. They are all identical and include walk-in closets and pantries to ensure access. The apartments include all basic utilities. The rent is $606 per month and, with the help of housing agencies, many are able to pay part of that with housing vouchers.
There is a Community Space that includes expanded cable, free wifi, and free laundry facilities. They also have many community events to encourage socializing of the residents.
Heroes into Homes is a separate organization but they work together. Heroes into Homes will provide assistance with moving as well as donated items to stock apartments with essentials as well as a few on-going staples.
