We learned that the company started 135 years ago as a light company but they changed that to an energy company. Their largest market is South Dakota where they still provide electricity. .
A tagline from their website is "Improving Life With Energy". On the site they expand to say: Every day, we want to be “improving life with energy.” We produce, market and deliver the vital electricity, coal, oil and natural gas that our customers need. Through our efforts, products and services, we also share our personal energy to strengthen our communities and support growth and development.
Though they do generate power and mine coal, their primary focus is electricity and natural gas.
They have acquired 19 different companies in their history and serve over 800 communities. Lincoln is the largest community in their footprint. Throughout Nebraska they serve 300,000 customers in over 300 communities - border to border.
Many of us know that they also play a vital role in our communities - they are more than just a community. The local offices are members of the Chambers of Commerce, employees are members of Rotary Clubs in nearly all communities, and Black Hills Energy supports community foundations.
They have a program called Black Hills Cares - they help people who need help with their utility bills.
When Jill talked about the legislative session she pointed out it is a short session - and everyone will hit the ground running. She feels that a primary focus will be the budget but that UNL will also take up much time as many have voiced concerns about activities on campus. Another topic that is getting much attention is prison reform and many are looking at tax changes.
Jill's passion for the political arena was evident - she stated that she became interested from her first visit as an intern while at UNL.
