February 11 at Lincoln South Rotary - Hausman Construction

At Lincoln South Rotary Club on February 11, we heard about Hausmann Construction from Heath Stuckenholz.
 
If you look at the Hausmann website (https://hausmannconstruction.com/), you will see that they work with a variety of types of projects. They have them broken down as:

Heath shared that Joey Hausmann, CEO, started the first-generation construction company in 2003. Joey grew up in northeast Nebraska and knew from a young age that he wanted to build things. He worked for others in construction and then decided to try going on his own. He purchased a plot of land and built houses. He knew it would be work but wanted to expand beyond building houses. He says it has been a 20-year grind for him and many others in the company.
 
But the success is evident. They have grown to a company of more than 400 employees and have offices in:
  • Lincoln – Home Office
  • Omaha
  • Kansas City
  • Norfolk (Joey grew up in Butte and wanted to have an office in that area)
  • Kearney
  • Denver
Most of the employees are field management staff - project managers and superintendents. They make sure that the sub-contractors are scheduled and do their work in the time frames for the project.
 
Hausmann does not want to be a "suitcase company" - sending crews to projects for a couple of years. Instead they like to have the employees stay at home with their families. They focus on projects that are no more than 3 hours from the offices. They will work outside of that range for the right project. Heath stated that it is obvious that Hausmann is a strategic company - they make sure the project is right for them.
 
Though they do projects of all types as shown above, the work they do on K-12 facilities is very rewarding. They like being affiliated with school development.They feel that these projects reach beyond the building - they really make a difference. Education is key to everything and touches the entire community. They are the construction company for both of the new high schools in Lincoln.
 
He said it is rewarding to work with LPS - they know what they want and give clear direction. The two schools are identical. Northwest will open first. They started on the Northwest High School and used what they learned as they moved through the phases on Standing Bear School.
 
Housing is another are of expertise - they primarily do multi-family apartment complexes. He said it seems that there are always new apartments being built and everyone wonders if we need another. But, in asking managers and owners it is interesting to learn that all are 95% occupied.

  • North Stadium Expansion University of Nebraska Lincoln
  • Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust - he talked about the new technology of windows which eliminates the need for window coverings
  • Lied Place Residences - that required much study because of the narrow tall building
  • Journal Star building renovated to housing and parking
