We had the opportunity to hear from the Commissioner of Education, Dr Matthew L. Blomstedt on the Nebraska Department of Education on July 13, 2018. He shared stories about his background and family and provided an overview of some of the Department's activities.

His passion for education came from a desire to be a part of ensuring that Nebraska is one of the greatest places to live. He said he did not choose the Education field - but it chose him. He grew up in Nebraska and he kept circling back to education as an important aspect as we think about the future of our State. A desire to help shape our future and ensure a good education is in place for his five children were contributing factors.

We learned that the Department of Education in Nebraska is organized with a hired State Superintendent (Commissioner of Education). This is different from most states where the State Superintendent is elected. The Board of Education for the State is elected with representatives in 8 districts. He talked about the strategic plan of the Nebraska Department of Education. The highlights of that plan are:

  • Create a dynamic vision that drives change through proactive leadership to support learning
  • Build connections amongst stakeholders to take action in support of success for all learners
  • Provide all Nebraskans significant opportunity to receive fair, equitable, and high quality education and services to close achievement gaps
  • Allow all learners to achieve their fullest potential in transitioning through phases of school and into civic life
  • Ensure all educators are effective in instructional strategies and monitoring student progress using multiple measures of proficiency
  • Prepare all learners to be college, career, and civic ready

As Matt talked about working with the various schools across the state, talking with the stakeholders and school leaders, you could tell he is determined to ensure that all interests are considered. He understands that there are differences in the schools, the communities and the cultures. But, he knows that the Department can serve all of those diverse needs.

He also pointed out that he has gone to them for their help - laying out the strategies and goals of the Board and asking them how they will help meet the goals. He knows that the goals can only be met by reaching outside of the Department.

We talked about the change in our students. Technology has changed what the students need. Even though the students may not need us in the same way - they need us.

Dr. Blomstedt spent time talking about our Four-Way Test. He believes in the values and will apply them in his work. He also believes there is value in sharing these ideals with students to make a positive change in them as individuals, in our communities and the world.
