On May 4 our speaker was Nicole McCarville of Children’s Hospital. She told us what they are doing: Changing Lives Together / Shaping The Future.
The Children's Hospital has their home base in Omaha 84th and Dodge. It was fueled by Margaret Doorley's interests in the midst of the polio epidemic.
First 60 beds in 1948, then 100 beds in the 1960s, then a move to a new 140-bed facility in 2000. They have added specialty centers and are home to 50+ outpatient clinics. Their current expansion will double the square footage of the facility and will add 136 more critical care beds.
Children’s is the only medical facility in Nebraska dedicated solely to children - they understand that treating children is different from treating adults.
Through every move and improvement the goal is to improve the life of every child..

There are facilities and/or clinics outside of Omaha, including:
•Lincoln, Columbus, Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, Norfolk, North Platte in Nebraska
•Rapid City, Sioux Falls in South Dakota
•And in Iowa, Sioux City, Atlantic
They are also heavily involved in research and currently have projects in the areas of Heart, Cancer, Rare Disease and Infectious Disease in children.
Children's is a collaboration that includes UNMC, NE Medicine, Boystown, CHI, Creighton, 15 Nursing Schools.
