On Friday September 6 the speaker at Lincoln South Rotary Club was Miki Esposito, Director of Transportation and Utilities for the City of Lincoln.
Miki pointed out the new Department name - it was formerly Public Works and Utilities. But, since transportation is a large part of the agency, they changed it to Transportation and Utilities.

TRANSPORTATION includes:
Maintenance Operations - the biggest piece of this is snow removal
Project Delivery
Right of Way Services
Traffic Engineering - making sure the signals work properly

TRANSIT includes:
StarTran Bus System

UTILITIES include:
Water System
Wastewater System
Watershed Management
Solid Waste Management

The new logo for the Agency:

The American Public Works Association (APWA) officially recognized the City of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department for achieving national accreditation. The APWA accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go above and beyond the requirements of the best management practices established nationally.

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities is the first agency in the state to meet the national requirements. It is only the 150th department to be accredited in North America.

Miki showed us a glimpse of what to expect in the future.

SMART CITIES - Internet based, devices communicating with each other
SMART CORRIDORS
- signal phasing and timing identifies the signal state and the time remaining until the next change
- this might include communication to the vehicle instrument panel to provide a countdown of the predicted time until the light turns green
SMART PARKING PLATFORMS - include the ability to identify where parking spaces are available
AUTOMATED VEHICLES - no drivers, no gas
