Lincoln South Rotary Club, along with Lincoln 14 and Lincoln East, provided dictionaries to students in Lincoln in March and April 2025.
It starts with a labeling, sorting and packaging party. Book plates are put inside the front of the Dictionary so the students can personalize with their name. They are then packaged into boxes with the appropriate number of dictionaries for each school.
The dictionaries will become the personal property of the student. Often they are so surprised that we are giving them a gift that is their own to have and take home.
Rotary Club Members then deliver the dictionaries to the schools, taking the opportunity to meet the student, personally present the dictionaries, and talk with the students. We introduce the children to the dictionaries and all of the information available to them. The children and teachers often have questions about Rotary.
Hearing from a of our Lincoln South Rotary Club Members who have delivered dictionaries this year:
Michaela: "I had such a fun time delivering dictionaries to the 3rd graders at [] Elementary! They were so excited and asked the best questions about the Rotary Club. Can’t wait to do it again next year!"
Bob: "They really appreciated the dictionaries and several kids asked if they really got to keep them. [] is a very diverse school with a lot of kids from lower income families, so a dictionary is a much bigger deal than it would be in a more affluent school. A good time was had by all."
Tom: "The kids are always so excited. They like to open the book and find something unusual. One pointed out that they found the periodic table then he was asked to explain that to the class."
