Lincoln South Rotary Club co-sponsors the UNL Rotaract Club with Lincoln #14. A few years back Rotaract embarked on a project to provide wheelchairs to Polio Survivors. The goal was met - the wheelchairs purchased - and soon will be delivered.
There was a member of the UNL Rotaract Club, Konan Blaise Koko ("Koko"), who was a polio survivor from the Ivory Coast. He shared the struggles and stories. He talked about how he could only go to school if his Mom could carry him until he got a wheelchair. That wheelchair represented independence and hope for the future.
Rotaract quickly raised the funds to deliver a couple wheelchairs to other polio survivors in the Ivory Coast. They then took on the challenge to raise $18,000 to provide 120 high quality wheelchairs to the Ivory Coast. A sample of the wheelchair and how the acknowledgement will appear:
We have learned that the wheelchairs will be delivered to the Ivory Coast on August 20. Hopefully "Koko" will be able to travel there to be part of a presentation celebration.
